Projection of Sediment Loading from Pearl River Basin, Mississippi into Gulf of Mexico under a Future Climate with Afforestation

Sediment load in rivers is recognized as both a carrier and potential source of contaminants. deposition significantly changes river flow morphology, thereby affecting stream hydrology aquatic life. We projected sediment from the Pearl River basin (PRB), Mississippi into northern Gulf Mexico under future climate with afforestation using SWAT (Soil Water Assessment Tool)-based HAWQS (Hydrologic Quality System) model. Three simulation scenarios were developed this study: (1) past scenario for estimating 40-year 1981 to 2020; (2) projecting 2025 2064, (3) that was same scenario, except converting rangeland located middle section watershed PRB mixed forest land cover. Simulations showed 16% decrease comparison due surface runoff. Over 40 years, monthly maximum minimum loads occurred, respectively, April August; whereas seasonal followed order: spring > winter summer fall. Among four seasons, accounted about 86% scenarios. Under conditions, 10% reduction annual average observed without afforestation. This study provides new insights how would affect Mexico.
